Review: Grinding Gears by @lissamatthews

GrindingGears300x450In the final laps, it’s ALL or NOTHIN’

Jason’s entering his rookie season as a big time stock car driver in the national spotlight, but he’s no stranger to breakneck speeds, sponsor expectations, or the older women who’ve revved his engine since he was a teenager. He’s content to learn and indulge himself until a blind date with a curvy smartass brings his boots to a screechin’ halt.

Alli’s strong, driven, a recent law school graduate. She’s also on a self-imposed man hiatus. And… despite the lure of a sexy, race car drivin’ cowboy, the good intentions of her friends, and an incredible job offer, she’s not giving in to the temptation.

Is she?

Jason knows he’s got one shot to prove himself to his new owners on the most famous super speedway of them all, and only one shot to win the heart of the woman he hopes is waiting for him at the finish line.

review

It has been a while since I have reviewed a book, so please forgive my style… To many term papers have defined my writing style… Let’s see if I can get back in the saddle, lol…

Alli is a woman hell bent on finishing the bar exam to finalize her law degree but something has been nagging her lately, in the back of her mind. She knew her life was missing something but she could not put her finger on it, until it almost slaps her in the face. Life is going great, her two best friends are doing things they love doing, one is with the man of her dreams and the other is doing the thing she loves (cooking). But what about herself… What was she doing… Oh yea… the bar exam, studying, working, studying, working… Yea, fun right… But we all know what that is like. With all that, there was just one thing she was missing…

Jason is all sorts of yumminess wrapped in blue jeans, a cowboy hat and boots and don’t forget strapped in a race car. He’s young and full of determination. He knows what he wants in life and he goes after it, not afraid of the consequences. His life has thrown him a few curves but the curves of one woman has gotten his attention and he won’t stop until she is his… Or at least that is the plan. Jason knows how to handle himself on and off the track but a woman is not like a car or a track. Going against a wall or a woman – which one will be the death of him (literally)…

Alli is all for love and lust and wonderful feeling insides but for other people. As far as she is concerned, she does not need that in her life right now. The bar exam is shortly coming and her attention needs to be focused on that and her job. Distractions are not what she needs right now, so when she meets Jason for the first time, her first instinct was to run the other way. She knew that anything he was offering was definitely something she was not needing in her life, at this point in time. She has her friends and they provide enough company that she was okay with that… Or was she… Alli would look to one of her best friends and watch her moon over the love of her life… then she would look to the other one and she was half way across the world doing something she was passionate about. But she was okay with that…

Let’s just say that I am so thankful Jason has a very determined mind set that when he wants something, he goes after it with all of his heart. That would mean racing and women… Or in this case, one woman by the name of Alli. She was prickly at first, but he knew that they could have something special or at least he wanted to see if what he thought was right. Alli pushed as hard as she could to keep Jason as arm’s length but sooner or later those arms get tired of being held up… And when they drop, just like the checkered flag, you will know who wins the battle!

This is a short story in my mind and it is a great read! The characters are hot and ready. You do not have to read book one to understand the friends that come in and out of the book, but it helps (but again you do NOT have too.) Now we just need the third story to finish the series and all will be right with the world 🙂 Great book Ms. Lissa, you have delivered another awesome story for us!

blurbIs the prospect of love worth dying for?

Vampires exist, and travel through space and time. Immortal, beautiful creatures. Neither dead, nor living.

Dane has no memory of being human. He only remembers waking after being unwillingly turned. He is left with a parchment with one single line written upon it: his human birthday. For this one day a year, he can live and die as a human. He is ready. It is time. 126 years after becoming a vampire, he is ready to die.

When he meets Jorge, with his dark good looks and brilliant blue eyes, Dane reconsiders his choice. Can he take back the life that was stolen from him by dying? Or can he make a life with a soulmate he never imagined having?

excerptThere was an unusual chill in the early evening air for Savannah in October. It wasn’t quite mid-month, yet. Dane could feel it, even with his…condition. He smiled, a wry twist to his lips. His condition. Right.
That’s what it was. Like something he could wake up from one day.

Only he never woke up from it. It was there, this nightmare he called living, this never ending existence. He was neither dead, nor alive. He survived on blood and very rare cooked meats. He had money, more than he knew what to do with, more than he could spend in three lifetimes. He could walk in the evenings and in the pre-dawn hours. He could even be out in midday, so long as he never stepped foot in direct sunlight. And with the advances in science, he could appear to have a light tan with a regular application of self-tanning lotion.

He wasn’t like the fabled and fictional vampires in books and movies. Well, not entirely. He could feel, taste, smell, though most things felt odd against his fingertips, tasted bitter or overly sweet on his tongue, smelled like…? He didn’t have a word to describe the smells. Neither acrid nor lovely. Things just…smelled.

A burst of raucous laughter reached his ears and he turned from where he stood against the edge of the walkway, mere feet above the water. His restaurant and pub was in fine form tonight. It was one of several businesses he owned under a parent corporation he’d formed some years ago. Everyone was owned by someone else, so it didn’t look odd to anyone that his corporation owned a bar, a hotel, and a bookstore. There were several other small companies he owned or invested in, but those first three were his money makers.

The bookstore had been a surprise. He loved to read, especially historical thrillers, Victorian erotica, and letters from soldiers who’d died on battlefields. He hadn’t expected the place to make any money, but then he hadn’t counted on the number of people who loved the same type books he did. He also had a section from local Savannah families who’d loaned parts of their personal libraries out to him for display. They were much like museum pieces. Priceless, fragile, exquisite.

The bookstore was where he spent the majority of his time, talking of books and places he’d traveled, showing off the volumes he brought back from various parts of the world. The bookstore was his passion. It was the only thing he had that kept him from taking the step that was closing in on him once more.
Death.

His human birthday was the one day a year he and all other turned vampires became fully human. They could do anything any other flesh and blood and beating heart person could do. Even die.

Oh, he could die any other time, as well. All he had to do was walk into a stream of midday sunlight and the life force which held him together would disintegrate and he’d be nothing more than vapor. He wouldn’t sizzle and burn. He’d been told he’d barely feel a thing. Whether that was true or not, he didn’t know. But he was tired, felt as though his soul, what was left of it, was stretched thin and to the point of completely unraveling. Vampires could go mad and there were days, hours, where he thought he just might.

Then, he’d lose himself in a book and the feeling would pass, calm would settle in, and he’d be all right. Those times were passing more quickly than they used to and something told him the end was near. Vampires were immortal, but those made against their will felt the call of death in ways those who were made willingly, never did.

It was calling to him.

bioLissa Matthews has many loves in her life: Family, friends, NASCAR, football, music of all kinds, cooking, BDSM, and last, but not least, coffee. She loves it so much she and those who know her are surprised she hasn’t floated away on a caffeine-induced cloud while giving life to feisty heroines and hunky heroes.

Lissa’s love of romance came from every book she has ever picked up. No matter what she read, she fell in love with the written word. The promise of escape, the deep, intriguing characters, and the winding journey from beginning to end, constantly drew her into bookstores and libraries as she was growing up.

Her first stories were written in junior high and she kept it up through college. She would stay up late at night when her kids were little reading romance and still penning her own stories. In 2007, when she and her family moved to North Carolina from Florida, she began pursuing writing as a profession and she couldn’t imagine doing anything else… Well, except maybe writing in her own cupcake bakery/coffee shop. But that dream is a ways down the road… Lucky for Lissa, she believes in dreams coming true.

Lissa is married with two children and seven, yes, seven cats. She blames her oldest child for the cats.

#Review: Shifting Currents by @lissamatthews

ShiftingCurrents300x450_jpg_pagespeed_ce_e4R424C9L_blurbBlake doesn’t want a mate. No way. No how. And he certainly doesn’t want her camping on his land, floating down his stretch of river, or looking like she belongs in his bed.

But that’s exactly what he gets when he happens upon a curvy woman with shades of sunset hair named Leah.

She’s on vacation and isn’t looking for any complications, especially in the form of a shifter or the possessive MINE signal he gives off.

So, what are two bears to do when they’ve convinced themselves they don’t want, much less need anyone else? They give in to the pull and mate, of course, but in sex only. No life commitment. No cubs. No changing the way they live: Separate and independent of each other.

Except when she leaves his mountain, Blake can’t get her off his mind and Leah can’t stop craving his particular brand of gruffness. Now, the one thing neither wanted, has come full circle, and is ready to bite them both.

review

First, let me say that I received this book for my honest thoughts. So, let me give it to you straight.

I am a huge fan of Ms. Lissa’s stories. If you have not read her stories, I urge you to please pick up one and read. You will see that she creates stories that make you fall in love and characters you will not forget. Her vivid description of the environment will make you feel like you are right there with the characters. But she will also make you feel what her characters feel – all of it, the good, the bad, the lustful, the passion, the hatred, the longing and the list can go on. She has a keen sense of writing that makes her stories memorable. And Ms. Lissa’s passion comes out in her stories… You will see 🙂

This is a short story, so I will try not to give to much away because I want you to read the story yourself and if I give to much away, then I just a soon tell you the whole story – but I am not going to do that… Because I am evil like that.

Leah is a woman that believes in her independence. She thrives on doing her own thing. She loves her family to pieces but being able to support herself makes her feel like she is worth something. She is the owner of her own business and loves living in the city, away from her family…. but she desperately just wants a break… So she packs up for a little mini vacation to the mountains. She knows the fresh air and clean water will be good for her, body and soul but what she did not intend on was meeting her mate out in the wilderness. She wanted nothing to do with a mate as she values her independence that much… But when she meets said mate… things just do not go the way she intended for them to go… Which way do they go… Well, let’s just say that these two stubborn people who do not want to be together plus the nature of mating equal two very miserable, powerfully passionate people… You will see what I mean 😉

Blake is a very withdrawn man. He has no desire to step foot in today’s society. He loves his house tucked deep in the mountains where no one can easily find him. He loves being a loner. He loves his family but is still hurt by past lost of his parents. Wanting a mate is not something he wants in life… Having to protect another life or even having to save another life is not something he wants to commit to. He does not want to commit at all. He is a man hell bent on being alone till the day he would die… That is until one fateful day, he gets a whiff of his mate… His bear knows that she belongs to him… but his human form wants nothing to do with her… Blake’s heart, head and bear cannot agree on what needs to be done, as one knows better than the other… and one knows that above all…. the bear will win!

This is a really good shifter story. I miss these kind of stories from Ms. Lissa. Even though the story is short, she does not leave anything out. The introduction of the characters and even the family members is done very well for a short story. Sometimes, authors can make a short story seem rushed or even leave out things a reader would want to know… But Ms. Lissa did none of this. She gave me a wonderful story of two people who know what lies ahead as the fates have already planned, but they try to derail the fates but it bites them on the ass… The attraction is raw, the passion is hot and the attitudes are awesome! Leah is a woman that will make you laugh with her witty comebacks and you will even laugh at some of her name calling… While Blake, well, Leah described him best – a grizzly of a bear, lol. He knows he is a hard person to get along with, lol. He will personally admit it. But together they think they can devise a plan to outsmart their fates

And this turns out to be one great story!

Guest Post and New Release: The Sticky Cowgirl (Lone Star Sweets #2) @lissamatthews

So, this is a shameless promo piece. Totally and completely shameless. See, I have a new book out tomorrow called The Sticky Cowgirl. It’s all about sticky buns and a boot wearin’ woman and the suit who falls in love with her less than polished ways. It’s about growth, change, compromise, and what one man will do when he never even realized he had a choice.

It’s the second book in my contemporary foodie romance, Lone Star Sweets series, which, I have to say, is a hoot to write. If you know me, you know I love food. If you don’t know me, you’ll soon figure out that I love food. Sweets, definitely. Oh and coffee.

My heroines are strong and independent, have curves and fluff, and my heros are handsome, stubborn, yet devoted to the soles of their shoes, whether Italian leather or with holes worn in. I’ve set the series in one of my favorite cities, San Antonio, Texas with it’s bright colors and busy downtown atmosphere surrounding the river that winds through it.

Lone Star Sweets, Book Two

Life is about to get sticky for by the book businessman, Samuel Stevenson.

Raised in Texan society, groomed to take over his stepfather’s company, and the hope of every debutante mama this side of Dallas, he wasn’t supposed to fall in love with a thorn in the company’s side: Samantha Dawson, owner of The Sticky Cowgirl.

But, fall in love he did.

Now, his job is in jeopardy, his mother is beside herself, and Samantha won’t budge an inch.

Will Samuel lose everything, or will the boot wearing, sassy mouthed rancher’s daughter show him exactly what he’s always wanted?

excerptSamuel Stevenson gazed down at the white flour now coating the front of his gray suit. His incredibly expensive gray suit. His incredibly expensive, custom tailored gray suit. “Was that really necessary?” he asked softly as he met the angry gaze of the woman standing on the other side of the large worktable. He composed himself, but the urge to reach out and strangle her was strong and it took everything he had to resist it.

It would, in fact, be wrong for him to do so, though it would make him feel so much better. It would solve part of his company’s problem, too. She’d been the biggest pain in the ass since the beginning. She was the last holdout. She was the last obstacle blocking his path.

And she’d just flung pastry flour at him. He sighed and curled his fingers into his palms.

“Get. Out. Of. My. Store.” Her words were measured, spoken low, and held back a temper that probably rivaled his. He couldn’t deny the attraction he’d felt for her the first moment he walked into her little bakery. But while the physical attraction to her blonde wavy hair she liked to wear in pigtails and her cute little sundresses that always drew his eye to the V between her breasts, her dark chocolate eyes and feet always clad in cowboy boots was strong, her less than willing attitude to listen to him and his proposal, left a lot to be desired.

“Miss Dawson,” he started again calmly, barely holding his anger in check while he brushed at the flour, which only made the stain worse. He gave up. “If you’d give me five minutes I know I could make you ―”

“There is nothin’ in the world you have to say that I want to listen to. You’re not gettin’ my business.”

Samuel glared at her. “With the money you would make by selling me this…this hole in the wall store, you could open a bigger one. You could afford to build one to your specific needs and design, state of the art. You ―”

“I don’t want any other store front or location. I want this hole in the wall and I’m not selling it to you.”

“Why are you being so difficult about this? It’s a good offer.”

“Maybe for you. I’m still not moving.”

“How did you end up being able to purchase it anyway? Most of your neighbors leased, yet you own. You’re also a start-up.”

“What? You can’t do your own research?” When he didn’t answer, she gave a frustrated growl and he had to bite back a smile. She was ladylike, but she was also a mama bear and the bakery was her cub. He might not like her tenacity, the difficulty she was causing his company’s project, but he had to admire her.

The building was just sitting here. The owner was behind on property taxes and it was going to go up for auction. I wanted it. It was a candy store years ago. All kinds of homemade candies and whenever we’d come into town, my parents would bring my brother and me here. My father paid the taxes and helped me set up shop. And now you…” She pointed at him. “You want to take it away from me.” She slapped her wooden rolling pin down on the dough in front of her and began rolling, moving it smoothly back and forth until the ball took the shape of a flattened circle. The more she rolled this way, then that way, the circle reformed into a rectangle. “It has sentimental value to me. It’s more than just a building. Besides, it wouldn’t set too well with the people around here.”

Her words mirrored and confirmed his thoughts and he nodded, even though she wasn’t looking at him. “I know, but you can open up a new place. I’m offering you more than enough to buy into a bigger and better location.” He knew the answer though. No matter what he offered or said, she wouldn’t change her mind. He couldn’t let her sentiment cloud his objective.”

“I don’t want a bigger or better location. I want this one. Right here. The one you’re trespassing on all the damn time. We don’t need any more riverfront condos that no one in this economy can afford anyway.”

“It brings work to the area.”

“For a little while, sure. And then what? Half of the units sit empty and those who built it are out of work again? No. You’re not getting my store just so you can tear it down.”

“I’ll add another twenty thousand to my offer. That’s considerably more than any of the other owners have received. They were happy to sign on the dotted line. You’re the last one, Miss Dawson.”

“Then I’d say they were too damn easy.” She wiped her brow with her arm and brushed a strand of hair out of her face. “The answer is no. I lucked into this little piece of property and it’s been perfect for me and my business, so I’m not giving up without a fight.”

“What are you making?” Samuel blurted. He hadn’t meant to ask, but ever since she rolled out the dough, then brushed it with butter, he hadn’t been able to look away from her hands. They weren’t exactly the prettiest ones he’d ever seen. The nails were short and there was stuff caked under them. He suspected it was the sugary mixture she was currently sprinkling across the dough from one end to the other and back again. She moved quickly, efficiently, but she was precise in her movements. He imagined she could do her job in her sleep and whatever she was making would turn out as perfect as if she were wide awake.

“Sticky buns. My grandmother’s recipe. Don’t you know anything about the businesses you’re buying out?”

Samuel shrugged. “It’s simpler to ―”

“To bury your head in the sand? To see numbers instead of people?” she finished for him.

“Something like that,” he murmured. “I ah… I don’t believe I’ve ever had a sticky bun.” Her eyes suddenly lifted and met his. He smiled at her surprise.

“Never?” He shook his head as her eyes widened. “But how is that possible?”

“There weren’t a lot of sweets allowed in my house growing up and I guess I’ve never felt the need to change that. Sweets like what you make, while they look good and smell good, aren’t good for you.” Her gaze narrowed as the words left his mouth. Great. Now he’d just insulted her business even further. Way to score points there, buddy.

“There are a lot of things that aren’t good for you, but if you’ve ever stopped to look, some of those things bring the purest joy to someone’s face and my sticky buns happen to do just that.”

“I didn’t mean ―”

“Oh, I know exactly what you meant.”

This is book was given to me for my honest thoughts… So let’s see what I have to say!

First, let me say this is a short, sexy story.  I will try not to give too much away in my review because the book is hot! Ms. Lissa created a story that will ring true no matter what class you feel you may fall in.  The upper class family that falls from their status and those left to pick up the pieces… The ones that were hurt by the family… Will they ever forgive them or forever hold the grudge against them? Ms. Lissa crafted the characters perfectly, with all sorts of seasoning and spices added to them.

Arabella, (I love this name, very unique) is a woman who has made up her mind that she is not going to allow her families past ruin her future. She is moving back to her hometown where the damage was done and she knows people are talking trash about her.  But does she care, hell no. Well, yes she does… but righting a wrong that she did not do is kinda hard… but so is the way some people are treating her. She just wants to carve out a little life for herself but when her car breaks down and she has no means for paying the mechanic, Travis… Well, that is when things get interesting.

Travis is man that is making a living doing what he loves – working on cars in a town he loves. He is everything that cover is made of… damn! And on one great day, his fantasy walks in his shop needing his help.  He knows it is going to cost him more than just the labor and parts of the car… it could possibly cost him his pride and his heart. Is that something he is willing to risk… The choice is his to make.

This story is written really good to keep you guessing at what will happen with each turn of the page.  The hurt and betrayal in this book really shows in each character but the forgiveness is what is important. Arabella tries to alleviate the pain that was created by her brother in the town she loves and is determined to reclaim as her hometown. Travis presents a twist in her plans she was not counting on and it is a delicious twist…. The description of every part of every…ummmmmm…. Thing is just absolutely enchanting. This story will leave you tingling and you might even love the way it ends… Ms. Lissa great job!!!

The cover almost beats my Buck!!! LOL!!!!!!!

Jilted bride? Check. Hangover? Check. Shotgun? Double check. Wayward groom’s half-brother Colt on her porch the next morning, hat in hand, with concern in his sexy blue eyes, and apologies on his full kissable lips? Uh… Check?
That was six months ago. Now, with a job she loves, her heart mended and her pride put back together, the last thing Chrissie expects is that same half-brother standing behind her saying he’s got an answer for her. Problem is, she can’t seem to remember what she’d said on that long ago day that would warrant a visit from him.
Colt does. And as the CEO of a cookie company, it’s his job to pay attention to the details.
“Maybe I should have married you instead.” She’d been right. He was the brother she should have married and all he has to do is convince her of it with a blend of persistence and seduction. But their first kiss is hotter than the southern Georgia summer and catches him off guard. She’s primed and ready to burn up the sheets and he’s not inclined to say no. Will she believe that he won’t ever leave her? Maybe. If he brings her cookies…

I obtained the above information from Ms. Lissa’s website….

One of my favorite lines…

Chapter 8, page 126

“He was sex-on-a-stick hot to her…”

Chapter 11, page 176…

“Oh, baby. All I want is to be married to you. All I want is to call you mine.”

If you have come to my blog a lot, you will know that I am a huge fan of Lissa’s work. Each story is different, each character is as different as the colors of the rainbow. The lust is unique, the desire just as potent… The drama catered to each story she creates. Lissa is very good at giving you a world of which you will hang on to every word that is spoken… ever caress you will feel…. And this story is just that good.

Let me introduce you to Chrissie… I adore her! She is such a strong woman. She got dealt the worst hand when it came to her wedding day… but she took it in stride and also took the high road. She did not sit and wallow in self-pity. She did not go through the “what is wrong with me” stage, she did none of those things… Instead, she got her shotgun and let off a little steam. She is larger than life but so down to earth. She is comfortable in her own skin. While most people would look at her and say, “What the hell?” I look at her and give her a high five and say “You go girl!” Until a man stirred things inside of her that she thought was just for fairy tales…. But does she trust again or does she lock her heart up….

Russ… Well, I wanted to hate Russ. I really did. He was an ass for what he did to Chrissie; he really was… But after I heard his side of his story and his apology, I lighten up on the guy. He is still an ass for what he did, but his apology took balls I was not sure he had… But because of his fuck up… Something wonderful happened…

When one doors closes, another one opens – right… Well, that would describe Colt’s life at the moment… The door closing being his half-brother’s failed wedding… The door opening would be the chance at making his own dream come true… Chrissie… Colt is a man hell bent on letting this woman know that he wants her, he cares about her… he wants to be in her life… But will she trust him enough to let him or will she think since he is “cut from the same cloth” family wise, he would be just like his half brother Russ…

This story was truly unique. From the way it was set up till the very ending. Reading the blurb of this story, I was a little scared of how this would go down… Knowing situations like this, I was scared that the story would suffer the effect of, “Are you serious?” in regards to the family triangle thing… But I have to say that Lissa did an awesome job at making me fall for this story. Russ did the worst thing possible to Chrissie – he left her at the altar. And making his sister be the one to tell her that he was not coming… So, yea… he was quickly dubbed the asshole for life… But then Colt steps in the picture. All caring and loving and hot… Hell, I turned into a damn puddle for him. But knowing the man Colt is made this story work.

If you know me, which I know most of you don’t really “know” me… but I love cookies. I am known as the Cookie Monster because if you just give me the cookies, no one gets hurt… Well, to learn that Colt runs his own cookie company… OMG… That just tickled me to death. But there are other elements of this story that worked… Chrissie is a very strong willed woman but very practical. She comes from money but does not let that hinder her life in the way most people would think. She makes her own money, lives on her own and does not expect her family to save her when things go to shit. But she knows the real world is a bitch and people do judge you… No matter where you go in life, someone, somewhere will always be judging you… But what I love about her is that she doesn’t give a shit. You only get one  life… You get to live that life once… So, don’t waste a moment on the what ifs… or the Could have/ Should have/ Would have… Just do it! And Colt is the man that wants to share that life with Chrissie. The journey these two make is worth every minute of reading!

Living in North Carolina, talented, multi-published author, Lissa Matthews, has many loves in her life: Family, friends, NASCAR, football, music of all kinds, cooking, BDSM, and last, but not least, coffee.

Review: Trouble In The Making by Lissa Matthews *Ellora’s Cave*

Trouble in the Making
Coming May 3, 2013 from Ellora’s Cave

Johnny Trouble. He’s a commanding presence in leather and tattoos, both on stage and off. He’s had more than his fair share of groupies and lovers, but it’s time for a change and he reconnects with the one woman whose memory has driven him crazy since high school. Liz.
She’s a quiet, shy romance author who likes her comfort zones. But when Johnny comes back into her life after years of living in the spotlight, Liz’s private fantasies shift into overdrive and she nervously asks him to fulfill them.
Just one weekend is all she proposes, but the sparks flying between them when Johnny touches her aren’t temporary. She’s the particular brand of trouble he wants in his bed, bent over, or crawling all over him. Forever.
He just has to convince her by any means necessary…

I received this book from Ellora’s Cave for my honest thoughts and review… Here goes!

For those of you that know me… and those that don’t this is my little statement about short books…. I do not judge short stories on the rush of their relationships, because they are just that – short stories. So, yes the relationships always could have been drawn out more, yea it seems like they fall in love to fast and of course the story could have been made longer… but it is a short story. So with that said…. here is my review..

I am a huge Lissa Matthew’s fan. If you come to my place you will know this! Her stories take me away to a place that – sometimes, I need to be. The world she allows me to escape to is riveted with lust, passion, desire… Her stories are filled with men that will make you want to lick them from head to toe and women that will do just that for you… She gives me everything I need for my heart to race, my panties…. well… Let’s just say that she lives up the Naughty part!

If you have had a rocker dream… this story will be for you! The name says it all… Johnny Trouble. He is larger than life and not afraid to go after what he wants. He has made all of his own dreams come true… but there is one dream he has yet to make come true. But being able to convince her that she is what his dreams are made of – might prove to be the hardest dream to make real.

Liz is a woman who is shy by all means… She allows herself to come out her shell to do her daily job but other than teaching or doing workshops – she does not like to be in the public eye. She lives vicariously through the novels she writes. She knows that life is more than just her normal, boring routine… but to put herself out there might mean rejection. Is she ready to deal with the rejection that might come from putting herself out there.. There is only one way to find out…. Trouble here she comes..

This is a hot little story but I actually was looking for more trouble with these two… because I saw so much naughty potential with these two…. Spankings, bondage, etc… I love Liz’s sassy mouth and Johnny’s dom side….  But this was a sweet journey of two people finding their way together… after all the years between them… However, I will say that I was looking for a little more when the ending came… I wanted more of Johnny and Lizzie and was a little sad to see it end…

 Time Flies

It’s been one of those months. You know, the kind that has flown by and you don’t even realize it’s beyond the halfway point until you’re into the next month? That’s me. I’m still trying to figure out where October and November went. September? I know where it went. I even know what I was doing. I was writing my new release, More Than This, editing Malachi’s Word which released in November, and editing Double Up which released in October. But where the actual months, those 61 days went? I haven’t got a freakin’ clue.

Do you ever feel that way? That the days are flying by so fast that you don’t have a chance to even catch your breath and savor the moments?

More Than This is a little like that. Two men, living their lives so differently, in ways that are important to them, but when they meet, circumstances make them see that there is something missing, something more than working and making money and holding on so tightly to the here and now, and even to the past, that they don’t see how different things could be…

Adam Sanchez makes good money, drives a vintage BMW, and is living up to the promise he made that he’d never be poor again. After two years without seeing his family for the holidays, he’s taking time off to give them a dream Christmas. At least, that was the plan.

But after taking a wrong turn off the interstate in search of the Blue Ridge Parkway, he finds himself skidding on a patch of ice and crashing into a big red barn. He wakes up sore, grumpy, and immediately attracted to his less than pleasant host who happens to be the spitting image of a young Elvis Presley.

Army veteran Josh Atkins doesn’t have time to babysit the idiot currently recovering on his family’s Christmas tree farm, but is left with little choice. That the man stirs something deep and primal in Josh can’t and doesn’t matter. It’s the busiest time of year and he’s needed at home.

As the two men begin to talk and share their stories, Josh’s hard-nosed stance softens. When he learns of Adam’s need to get to Asheville before Christmas, Josh is torn between letting him go and asking him to stay.

Maybe Josh can help Adam see that there’s more to happiness and freedom than a large bank account, and maybe Adam can teach Josh to see beyond the surface to the man he is beneath. And maybe, just maybe, they can show each other that there really is more than this.

Excerpt:
“He still callin’ you Elvis?”

“Was the first thing out of his mouth when he could speak.” Josh shook his head, a self-deprecating smile crossing his lips. “Not sure why he keeps calling me that.

Todd laughed. “Same reason we’ve been calling you that all your life. You look just like him.”

“I don’t look anything like him.”

“I beg to differ, Bro. You do.”

Josh turned. Adam was standing, or rather barely standing behind him. The barn door frame was holding him up. Thankfully Todd had all his wits about him and moved quickly to help Adam sit on a barrel they normally used for decorative purposes. Adam sitting on it was, in and of itself, kinda decorative. He was dark-skinned, Latino, with black hair and nearly black eyes. His features were classic, handsome. Josh had never been so physically attracted to a man, not even Brent, and it surprised him. He couldn’t put his finger on why either, nor did he know what he was supposed to do about it.

Josh finally spoke. “You shouldn’t be out here.”

“Tell the truth, it wasn’t easy. I wasn’t sure where the little path led. Then again, halfway across the porch, I wasn’t sure the path was even real.”

“You black out?”

“No. Least I don’t think so. More dizzy than anything. I waited for it to pass, then tried walking slower. It worked, and here I am.” Adam’s smile after his explanation seemed a little forced, strained.

Josh nodded. “You get ahold of Jimmy?” He grabbed another mug and filled it with some of the hot chocolate, then walked it over to Adam. When he reached for the mug, Josh noticed Adam’s hands were shaking. “You should be in bed. You don’t have the strength to be walking around yet.”

“I-I’m figuring that out.” Adam lifted the blue tin camping mug to his lips and took a sip, followed by a second and third. “Mmm. This is really good,” he said with his lips pressed against the side of the cup. He took one last sip, then handed the cup back to Josh. “I’m not sure I can hold it without spilling it.”

“It’s a family recipe,” Todd offered. He was still standing beside Adam and looked ready to catch him if he fell over.

“You should sell it,” Adam said tiredly.

“Our mother would kill us.” Adam laughed, but it was a short-lived sound. He quickly grabbed his midsection and almost bent double. “Then you shouldn’t sell it,” he wheezed. “God, this fuckin’ hurts.”

“I know, buddy,” Josh whispered. He’d done what he could to help enough of his service brothers through harder and more painful injuries, many fatal, that he could help Adam through his discomfort and weakness. Adam’s pain would heal relatively quickly, and he wouldn’t have nightmares. He wouldn’t have PTSD. He wouldn’t have flashbacks and phantom feelings for limbs that were no longer physically part of his body the way some men Josh knew did. No, Adam would recover and be good as new, but for the time he was at Josh’s place, Josh would give him the same kind of care and consideration as he’d given those he’d served with.

That he was attracted to Adam?

Well, that just couldn’t figure into it.

“I need to get you back up to the house and back into bed.”

“I don’t think I can make it. Just let me sit here for a while.”

“Adam…” Weariness and warning fought for supremacy in Josh’s utterance of that one word.

“Please,” he said with his eyes closed. “I’ll stay right here, out of the way.”

“But you should be laying down, resting. Not sitting on a barrel in a barn out here in the cold.”

“I’m not used to being cooped up, so unless you’re going to pick me up and carry me up to the house, which would be interesting to see, I’m going to stay put for now.”

Josh ground his teeth together. Adam was right, and something about that pissed Josh off. He couldn’t carry the man, especially through the snow, especially with Adam hurting, but damn… Josh would sure love to put the arrogant, good-looking ass in his place. “Fine. If you start feeling worse than what you do right now, let me know. I won’t go far.”

“How much of that hot chocolate can I have?”

Todd, who Josh had nearly forgotten was standing there, laughed.

“You can have as much as you want. There’s always a batch being made during the season.”

“I don’t normally like hot chocolate. I’m a coffee man, but that chocolate is amazing.”

“I bet you take your coffee black,” Josh interjected from a few feet away where he was topping off Adam’s cup.

“Black and strong. Imported from South America each week.” Todd whistled his surprise.

“That’s gotta cost a fortune.”

“The best things in life generally do,” Adam confirmed.

“But it’s worth it.” Josh shoved the cup at Adam, doing his best not to spill it.

“Money doesn’t always buy the best things in life.”

“It buys many of them.”

“It doesn’t and can’t buy the most important things.”

“Depends on your definition.”

Josh bit the inside of his cheek hard enough to taste blood. “Yeah. I guess it does.” He stalked off for the second time that morning. “Holler if you need me.” When he was out of sight of his brother and Adam, Josh stopped and took a deep breath. So, Adam really was all about the money. God. That sucked.

Review: Malachi’s Word by Lissa Matthews

C’mon on in! The beer’s cold, the atmosphere lively, the men plentiful. Scoot your boot heels through the door and settle on a stool. Our bartenders, Malachi and Eli, aim to please and our chef, Abe aims to satisfy. We’ll help you slake your thirst and we’ll make damn sure you have a good time…

Drunken confessions. Sobering friendship. And two cowboys gambling on love…

The Bar Next Door, Book 1

Could he love me? Malachi has wanted to know the answer since his best friend, Daniel, confessed to being gay. He has never forgotten that long-ago conversation, or the secret hope that another confession would follow: that Daniel is in love with him.

Daniel is—and always has been—in love with Malachi. But how is he supposed to share that information without risking the only friendship that has ever mattered to him? He couldn’t handle it if he were kicked out of Malachi’s life. The best Daniel could do was move home to Texas, buy a little rundown ranch to work outside Austin, and visit the watering hole where Malachi tends bar.

Malachi knows that something heavy is riding his friend and he’s tired of watching Daniel’s downward spiral of too much beer and too many meaningless flings. Enough is enough.

Except, when he gets Daniel home and some strong coffee down his gullet, the truth comes pouring out. A truth that nearly knocks Malachi out of his boots.

Courage like that doesn’t come easy…and Malachi can only pray his answer is enough to turn lifelong friends into forever lovers.

Warning: This little tale tries to contain a gay bar, a lot of beer, a hot cowboy with a pitchfork, another one with a serious addiction to boots and coffee, and a secret yearning between the two for hot blooded, can’t wait to get naked, just leave your boots on sex. Oh, and there are doughnuts…

I obtained the above information from Lissa’s website.

So with that said…. here is my review…

And just a reminder, if you have not figured it out yet… This is a m/m story line… This story is m/m loving. If this is not your cup of tea, you will not hurt my feelings if you just simply stop by to say hi! I just hope that one day, you give m/m loving a chance! Every one deserves to be happy! 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!

Okay… If you come here a lot, you will know that I love Lissa’ and her stories… If you don’t come here a lot – well, you need to go to my labels at the bottom left of my blog and look for Lissa’s name and go check out her stuff! She is awesome! Her writing creativity will enthrall you… She builds her stories in a way that will keep you turning the pages… The passion she creates will heat up your chilly nights… She will tear your heart apart and then put it back together… She will make you want to slap a person or two in the story… She will make you want to hold and love other people! And this story is no different…

This story is about two best friends… Best friends since – forever. They have been there for each other through thick and thin. They have been through things that most people do not go through in their lives – especially at an early age. But there for each other is what they are. They are the rock for each other and the shoulder to leave on. Even being gay did not put a dent in their relationship… However…. relationship is what each other wants but is to chicken shit to say…

This story will tear you up and want to make you beat the shit out of Mal. He is so stubborn and Daniel… Well, he is just as stubborn too. Mal has always known the man he wants by his side, to call his partner. But risking his best friend’s friendship was something he really did not want to lose. No matter what. Mal would give his life for Daniel; he would even give his heart for Daniel. But losing him is not an option in Mal’s world. But upon hearing that Daniel could possibly have a love interest is tearing Mal up inside and coming clean is not an option any more…..

Daniel can’t handle not being able to have the one man he has always wanted. So the best remedy for that is to have a open fling with every boy toy that comes his way and to brag about it! Well… Daniel would be happy with that – if he actually had done half of what he brags on. Daniel is miserable… He just wants one man… His best friend… Always has, always will want – Mal. But having him is another thing… Because nothing is worse than not having your best friend around because your feelings get in the way…

This story is great… It is about two men who are sure in their own lives. Each one has things going there way, but the one thing they want going their way… is not! Best friends never equate to lovers… but what if it could work… Would you risk your best friend for what you think you could have… Mal and Daniel are sure they do not want to lose each other, but have no idea of what they could have because they are both to damn stubborn… But one night… things change… Is that a good thing… Well one way to find out… Coming clean…
