It wasn’t long at all before the doorbell rang; Raquel hurried to answer it. The electrician was tall, with dark hair, high cheekbones and blue, blue eyes. Stubble shadowed his strong jaw, giving him a rough-and-ready sort of look. Broad shoulders strained at the seams of his blue work shirt, which had SCOTT stitched in neatly machined letters on the breast pocket. There was a toolbelt hanging around his waist, black jeans clinging snugly to his long legs.

“Mrs. Morrison? You need an electrician?” His voice was a low, husky rumble, those incredibly blue eyes intent as his gaze swept over her, taking in her dress, her shoes, her hair and makeup before giving her a slow, appreciative smile. A little shiver of lustful anticipation rippled through her; she sternly ordered her knees not to shake.

“Yes, our power’s gone out.” She was still holding the candle, though she could see him perfectly well by the streetlights; he smirked at it and produced a big flashlight, handing it to her.

“You want to show me to your fuse box?”

She accepted the flashlight, put the candle down on the sideboard and gestured for him to follow her through to the garage, where she knew the electrical switchboard was. Walking through the house, she had the distinct impression that Scott was watching her ass, the sway of her hips as she moved.

Well, you did put this dress on for a reason, Raquel, she told herself, a little smirk of feminine triumph touching her lips.

Johan stood beside her, and could feel her arm against him. The slight grazing of her skin assaulted his senses. Christ Landers, they’re praying and you’re thinking of that. She did the sign of the cross again, and the prayer ended.

“It’s not fancy,” Jesi said as she handed him an old bowl and spoon. “We’re blessed we didn’t lose our house.”

“It smells delicious, and reminds me of you.” Johan smiled, remembering the coconut oil.

“You know what rice is right?”

“Yup.”

“I hope you like seafood.”

“Sure do.” A grin spread across his lips. “My favorite is brown trout because my Pops used to take me fly-fishing in the Catskills, and we caught a lot of that kind of fish.”

“You’re a fisherman?”

Johan watched as she ladled fish, shrimp, and white broth into his bowl.

“I wouldn’t go that far. I was mediocre on my best days. Pops was great at it. We’d come home with tons of fish.”

They moved down the table.

“Sounds like you miss him.”

“I do. He passed awhile ago.”

“I miss both my grandpas.”

In an instant, he saw the joy dissipate from her face. Don’t make her cry.

“What is that?” Jeez, I might have to eat it. “If I eat whatever that is,” he nodded toward the bowl of beans and something, “will it bring that pretty smile of yours back? I didn’t mean to make you sad.”

His smile. It melted her. “Thanks,” she managed with a hesitant smile. Attention from a man with his sex appeal threw her off. What she really wanted to do was put her chin on her hand so she could stare at him for the rest of the evening.

“So, how did the rest of the packet delivering go?”

She took a drink of water since her mouth had gone dry with him this close. “Good actually. It’s been a while since I was here to help with any of this. Since high school really. It surprised me how many people are still around. How many people never left. Or left and came back. Can’t believe it’s almost been ten years. Seems a lifetime ago.”

“And you’re sure we met in high school? You’re sure of it?”

Wanting to giggle and groan at the same time was a new one for her. “Only a few hundred times.”

“It just doesn’t seem possible. Surely I’d remember you.” He gave her a once over from head to waist. Everything he could see above the table probably.

Shaking her head seemed like the thing to do. “I was very different in high school. Popularity was the name of a very distant planet when I was a teenager.”

“Can’t imagine you being that different. Truly. Care to give me your name and I can look you up? High school yearbooks and all should be good for something other than killing spiders.”

“Nope.”

He chuckled and picked up his menu. “You do know what I do for a living, right? I could run your plates and figure it out within five minutes. I could show you my ID if that would help.”

“You wouldn’t.”

“Ha. If you could see your face right now.” He chuckled and she tried to wipe the panic off her face and probably didn’t do a very good job. “I won’t. I’d much rather figure it out on my own. I love solving puzzles.”

“I’m a paralegal for Tate and Bloom.”

“Very nice,” he growled.

Georgie glanced down, making sure her sweater was closed, and sat on a recently vacated barstool. She was served her usual Diet Coke with a lemon slice, fingering the glass with nervous energy and smirking at Calvert while she searched for Adam through the crowd. Sipping her drink like a medicinal drug to treat the ill-at-ease feeling in her stomach, she tried hard to ignore the lecherous stare from which she shied away.

“Miss?” A gravelly voice, deep and comforting pierced the despotic darkness. “Can you hear me?”

Strong arms enveloped me, lifting me from the floor. I cracked an eyelid and slammed it shut again immediately. The smoke remained thick and the burning was so bad I couldn’t see through the moisture pooling in my eyes, the flood of tears protecting them. The crackle of fire returned in a rush and my body turned rigid in response.

“It’s okay. I’ve got you,” he murmured, and folded me closer to his hard chest. Safe. I felt safe in his arms. He took measured steps. “Is there anyone else in here? Anyone who needs help.”

I shook my head as a bout of coughing took over any ability to speak. Shouts rang out, men rushed by, disturbing the smoke, creating a whirlwind of warm air which brushed the sweaty strands of hair clinging to my forehead. It felt like a film of smoke and perspiration had encased my entire body.

“Codsworth,” I choked.

“What?” he asked. He had to be a fireman. Fresh air now. Or, was it him? He had the most amazing smell. I couldn’t open my eyes, could hardly breathe, but the scent of some woodsy cologne — Gucci? — permeated my nostrils through the haze of soot that lingered there.

“Codsworth,” I repeated. “My cat. He’s upstairs.” I clutched his arm with all my remaining strength. “Please …”

“Don’t worry,” he replied. “I’ll get him for you.” He quickened his pace and I clung to him with arms like noodles, resting my head against the fire retardant suit. He was as hard as a rock and for some reason, I felt like everything would be okay as he took charge.

The air grew clearer; there was a rush of wind and sound. Sirens blared, people chattered.

“Oh my God, can you believe it,” a woman said nearby.

“It doesn’t look too bad.” That was a man’s voice. Spectators probably, but my eyes were too scratchy to open yet and I didn’t even want to try.

“Here, take her,” the firefighter carrying me said, his deep voice raspier with the smoke. Then he placed me on a bed, a stretcher. Fingers brushed my ear, and the heat of his breath penetrated. “I’ll come back after I’ve found Codsworth. You’re safe now,” he promised, all calm confidence.

My skin erupted in tingles as gooseflesh spread across my skin. I forced my eyes open, staring through the blur of tears, but he was already gone.

“Who—?”

“You’re fine now, just relax.” A woman in a paramedic outfit appeared beside me and placed an oxygen mask on my face.

I frowned at her, my eyes had cleared pretty fast, though my chest still felt croaky. My limbs were floppy too. None of it mattered compared to losing the bakery. Or Codsworth.

I tried to pull the mask off, but she stopped me.

“No, you rest now. There’ll be enough time for talking later.” The medic lifted a flashlight and checked one eye then the other. “Looks okay there.”

I let her carry on with her protocol, but I felt stronger by the minute. I’d inhaled a bit of smoke. I’d not been burned to a crisp. The blessed oxygen flooded my lungs, clearing my mind and body. But still, I was exhausted. To the bone.
