Interview

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Melissa Graves author of Tainted Heart

Hi Melissa, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

Favorite thing about building your own world?

As a writer who always prefer to dabble in paranormal/supernatural/sci-fi-/fantasy themed worlds, creating something outside of “reality” is a constant pleasure. There’s a unique freedom to being able to step outside of modernity and every day existence in fiction. In the Mi Corazon Sangrante series, a world where vampires and humans live side by side is presented as naturally as any author might present a “regular” cast of characters and the situations they find themselves in. It was also fun to create my own kind of vampire, presenting them less as morally questionable creatures of the night and more as long-lived, efficient predators. I like the living-in-plain-sight idea: these people have always been around and can blend easily—so what does humanity do when they realize they are surrounded by vampires they know nothing about, most of whom are people they know, like, and maybe even love, and have to suddenly and openly incorporate them into society? Fear and caution promotes an attempt at logical, federally-funded assimilation of vampires into human life, but beneath the surface the system is as corrupt as any other. In Tainted Heart, you’ll see just how this begins to reveal itself.

What inspired you to write your first book?

I began writing “novels” in my early teens, mostly fanfiction based off of young adult sci-fi/fantasy novels I was crazy about. By then my work was already veering toward the romantic/erotic—those young adult novels definitely lacked a certain thing I was looking for—and from there I just kept writing fanfiction, increasingly preferring the queer kind as I delved into different fandoms. In the last few years I decided to create original works, using what I learned from years of writing fanfiction to create something I myself would love to read, with the diversity and erotica that my readers have always looked for in my previous work. I just needed to have it my way, and writing was the way to make that happen!

Do you have a specific writing style?

I’d like to think so. My style is definitely sparse. I’m heavy on dialogue and explicit erotica, and light on prose. I like readers to be able to apply their imaginations to my work, so I don’t go overboard describing places and things. I want to save that immersion for my sex scenes—there, I want to take you in and keep you, and then turn you out dizzy and flushed. If I’ve accomplished that, I’m happy.

Who are some of the authors that influenced you to write?

Anne Rice set the tone for my teenage years and the formation of my writing style—everything from her early erotica to her most recent works have been influential for me. I love the richness of her settings and characters and the way they interact. I love the pain and the pleasure she imbues in everything she writes. I love that she doesn’t shy away from explicit topics and the darker side of humanity as well as non-humanity. The personality of her characters takes center stage against a backdrop of sumptuous locations and scenarios. It’s just great stuff all around.

What are some jobs you’ve held? Have any of them impacted your writing? How?

I’m ashamed to admit how much time I’ve spent at my 9-5’s writing or planning to write. These events are entirely in the past, of course. I would never do such a thing at my current employment! Never. Nope. (Man, I hope my boss doesn’t like gay vampire erotica.)

A lot of authors hate the grind to pay the bills, but I have to be honest, some of my best writing happens during downtime at work. I can get really distracted at home, but at work I seem to think more clearly.

I work a pretty standard office-based job and always have since I graduated from college, and I appreciate it because it allows me to pay my bills so I can spend every minute of my downtime doing the thing that really gets me going.

excerptWhen it gets dark, he texts Brian that he’s going to be out late, and avails himself of not one but three vampire-human nightclubs set along a dense strip of Chicago nightlife. Going alone to places like this always attracts immediate attention, and he isn’t surprised when he has to pry both humans and vampires off of himself. But he doesn’t mind—the blood from the center is humming in his veins, and that buzz takes on a new dimension every time that he swallows a thimbleful of blood from a donor, which he does at least a dozen times over the course of the evening. When he’s more relaxed, he allows bodies against his own, dancing with strangers until strobe lights become normal and everything outside is too dim and still.

The blood changes the world around him. Every color, every sound and every source of light takes on a life of its own.

He loses track of how many donors he pays. All he knows is he’s spent all of the pocket money that Brian gave him for the weekend.

He feels like a bloated tick. He’s been away too long. Brian. He has to get back to Brian.
