Transplanting Texan Cowboys by Ylette Pearson
The word cowboys always invoke pictures of handsome hunks riding into the sunset in a cloud of dust somewhere in the United States of America. The two cowboys in Her Bareback Cowboys are no exception. They’re handsome, sexy and comfortable in their own skins. With their natural confidence exacerbated by the fact that they originate from Texas, I just had to take Wade Randall and Maverick Green out of their comfort zone.
South Africa is the last country where you’d expect to find true Texan cowboys and therefore it was the ideal setting to make our handsome boys a little uncomfortable. Plucked from mid-summer in Texas and dropped into the heart of the Highveld winter in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa, the men had to adapt—and fast.
People experience the winter landscape of Mpumalanga in two ways: either you find it dull and lifeless, or you find it breathtakingly beautiful in its hues of brown, red and yellow. A typical morning Highveld scene in the country includes small streams partially frozen with the moving water creating mini-waterfalls over shards of ice and round boulders. Weeping willows, stripped bare of their usual tiny leaves, dip their shoots into these half-frozen streams and sway in the dusty breeze. Tall, yellow grass covers the rolling hills while the bleak winter sun turns the frost particles clinging to the grass seeds, into sparkling diamonds. It was interesting to see if the cowboys could remain positive with the abrupt change of both climate and scenery.
To step up the tension even more, the men had to cope with the change in culture from Western to African. Nothing in their own backyard could prepare them for the African beat vibrating through the whole country. While the metropolitan areas manage to seamlessly integrate Western and African cultures, the countryside pulse to the drums unique to Southern Africa. Taking into account the general condition of the country roads and the minivan taxi’s stopping and pulling away randomly, even getting around on the South African roads are a challenge to any first time visitor—especially considering that South Africans drive on the left side of the road.
When you add a feisty woman to the mix and have both cowboys lusting after her, their friendship and loyalty to each other is tested. Having indulged in ménages before, the three decide to have just a little bit of fun. However, when both cowboys fall head over heels for the pretty photographer, their friendship is put to the test.
Who will get the girl and will their lifelong friendship survive the onslaught of a lover’s triangle?

Wade removed his foot from where it rested on his knee. “Don’t change the subject. You’re not opposed to the idea?”
Adrian shook her head. No use pretending she didn’t want them. “I’ll leave the details up to you.” She got up from the chair. “Just so you know, I like creative men.”
“Yeehaw,” they replied in a chorus, and Adrian laughed.
“So what are you waiting for? Get your gear, and let’s head out.”
The sun had started to lighten the sky during their conversation and the temperature had dropped a few degrees. Already she could see frost forming on the ground close to the house. She shivered and pulled her jacket closer to her body.
Maverick stood and sipped on his coffee. “I don’t know much about the weather here, but I sure as hell hope it’ll warm up during the day.”
Adrian wanted to smack her forehead for her oversight. The men came from summer in Texas to winter in South Africa. “It will. Our mornings are chilly, but it warms up nicely after a couple of hours, and between eleven in the morning and three in the afternoon it can be quite pleasant.”
“Pleasant as in you don’t freeze your butt off so much, or pleasant as in I can take my shirt off?” Wade enquired.
“Both. By eleven you won’t need a jacket if the wind doesn’t pick up.” She indicated toward the mountains. “However, the weather in the mountains can be very unpredictable, so it’s better to be prepared. You can have both winter and summer in one day.”
Maverick nodded. “Great. Where to today then?”
“I thought you guys could get used to the saddles, and I’ll follow in the Cruiser. If I see a good spot for a photo, I’ll stop you. That way we get to accomplish two things at once.”
“Sounds fair to me.” He drained the coffee in his mug and turned to Wade. “You ready to saddle up?”
“Just waiting on you to move your ass.”
