Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m an urban fantasy writer, author of the Rune Alexander series. I live in Southern Ohio and spend most of my time writing. And reading. J

 

In this book, who was your favorite character to write and why?

I think Rune is always going to be my favorite character to write. She’s so interesting and a little bit crazy. There’s always something new to discover about her. Most of all, I love watching her change and grow.

 

What 3 words would you use to describe your main characters?

Tough, passionate, and protective.

 

Can you tell us a little bit about this book? Maybe a little snippet?

I can do that!

Obsidian Wings is book four in the Rune Alexander series. Here’s the long blurb—

Gruesome murders begin to pop up in River County, and Rune is introduced to the bird shifters–to one bird in particular, a woman named Cree Stark.

When she gets a whiff of the shifters’ scents where COS had been executing a grisly sacrifice, Rune begins to suspect the birds know more about the slayers–and the twins–than they’re willing to admit.

Nothing is more important to Shiv Crew than finding Levi and Denim, but when Lex psychically connects with the twins, it isn’t good news she brings back.

As always, COS is at the center of it all.

The world is beginning to look at the church differently, thanks to the tireless work of Bill Rice and others like him. The humans’ acceptance is turning to fear.

And what people fear, they hate.

What the slayers are planning next will either finish them for good or give them everything they’ve ever wanted–Karin Love and unchallenged power.

Rune and the crew race against time to save River County from the biggest monster they’ve faced yet. If they fail, the church will be closer than ever to their dream of creating an Otherless world.

In Obsidian Wings, Rune hides a devastating physical weakness, makes an important choice in her love life, and gains a new understanding that will help her face the future.

She sighed. He always worried about her, even though he was going through his own hell. “I will.”

She  clicked  off,  glanced  at  the  door,  then  at  the  bed.  But pacing and worrying would achieve nothing.

So she undressed and climbed under the sheets.

For something. For someone.

She lay in the dark, her fingers touching the sharp, silver shiv she’d slid under the edge of the mattress. Not that she’d need a blade with the claws she possessed, but old habits died hard, and she found comfort in the routine.

She waited.

Her heart fluttered uncertainly, beating rapidly enough to hurt the recently healed stake wound scarring her chest.

She heard the click when the lock was picked, a tiny click not as loud as the click her throat made when she swallowed.

She closed her eyes.

Kept them closed as he undressed, as he slid into the bed beside her.

But she knew who he was. His scent was as intoxicating to her as the smell of blood, as familiar as the scent of the individual crew members…

 

How do you go about picking character names? Do you have to get them just right and make sure they fit with the characters personality? 

I LOVE names. I will sometimes choose an odd or different name—Rune, Strad, Z, Raze—or a completely ordinary name—Jack, Ellis, Owen. Or my matching cool names—Levi and Denim. Most of the times I’ll have the name first, and the personality comes from the name. I mean seriously. Ellis? How else could he be? J

 

We’re cover hussies. What was your first impression of this cover?

I adored it. It is the first cover with one of the men. So it’s perfect.

 

What does writing mean to you?

Writing is what I do. I can’t imagine not writing. If I’m not writing, I’m thinking about writing. When I was a little kid I was writing. It’s something I feel I was born with. Why else would I love it so much? J

 

What do you hope readers take away after reading one of your books?

I want them to fall in love with the characters. I want my books to take the reader out of his or her reality and give them an escape into my characters’ worlds. I want the reader to feel like they know the characters, and when they finish the book, I want them to miss the characters, just as they would miss a friend.

 

If you had a technology free day, what would you do?

Lose my mind, maybe. Haha. I’d probably camp and hike with a friend. Though I do not like bugs, I still love being in nature.

 

What are you currently working on?

I’m working on New Regime, book five in the Rune Alexander series.

Sexiest feature on a man?

Eyes, smile, arms. Lips. Belly. Hair. I can’t decide!

Boxers, Briefs or Commando?

Boxers.

What is on your night stand/dresser?

A basket full of odds and ends—tiny flashlights, note pads, pens, scissors, etc. A couple of battery operated lanterns, a lamp. A 3DS XL, two Kindles, a remote control for my fan, a remote for the TV, and a remote for one of the lamps.

Hairy chests or smooth?

Smooth!

Cowboy or businessman?

Hmmm. That’s a hard one. Cowboy. No, wait. Businessman.

Tattoos or piercings?

Tattoos

Secret talent?

If I told you, it wouldn’t be a secret!

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Maybe all my video games, although I’m not feeling too guilty about them. J

Celebrity crush?

Rafa Nadal. 😉

Night owl or early bird?

I used to be a night owl but forced myself into becoming an early bird. It was so much easier on me.

I really don’t use either one of them, but I might look into them in the future.

ebooks or paperbacks?

Ebooks. I love my Kindles. I love the convenience and that I can carry around dozens of books at once.

Here is my 5¢ (we don’t have pennies anymore in Canada to give out 2¢) 🙂  on Obsidian Wings

Laken can’t pump out books in this series fast enough for me. This is another great addition to the series. She did not disappoint. As usual we get to see Shiv Crew cut down the bad guys. We meet some new characters as well as learn some things about the others.
We’re not dealing with Zombies in this one, we’re dealing with the Birds and Slayers. Damn those birds, I was internally screaming “don’t trust the birds” 😉 Rune is an imperfect character and she puts herself in situations that you know will turn out horribly, but somehow she makes it through tougher and stronger than before. You can’t help but root for her. She’ll do anything for her friends even if it puts her in danger. I’ve said it before and it bares repeating, She’s a bad ass!
Laken tied up storylines and weaved in upcoming ones flawlessly. It was another action packed, adrenaline pumping page-turner.
