Book Tour: Midnight Ink Anthology featuring Sidney Bristol

When Eden Bradley approached me about writing something for the Midnight Ink boxed set, I knew I wanted to write something a MIALLlittle different. You see, I have a whole series about tattoo artists called So Inked. I needed another angle.

I don’t know when or how I decided that the heroine from Picture Her Bound would be a tattoo model, but it happened in a stroke of inspiration. I knew not only what kind of modeling she did, but also her whole tattoo story.

Everyone who gets a tattoo, no matter how small or large, has a tattoo story. Regardless if you walked in off the street and picked a design off the wall, or had something meaningful and special sketched up before hand for a custom tattoo, there’s a story behind it. Maybe you were on the trip of a lifetime and commemorated it with a special tattoo. Maybe you wanted an ornate design to memorialize a family member or accomplishment. There’s a story behind each and every tattoo.

picture-her-boundI knew from the moment I wrapped my head around Odalia as my heroine that her tattoos told a story, not just of who she is, but what she’d been through. Since the whole Midnight Ink series is set in New Orleans, many of us had to answer the question of where our characters were when Hurricane Katrina hit.

For Odalia, she was at home with her father, and for several days they had to wait out the storm. Disasters change people, and who Odalia is in her story is a different person than she would have been without the storm wrecking her life. Because of the generosity and kindness shown to her at her lowest point in life, she has a strong love for the city of New Orleans and that love translates to ink.

Now, when talking tattoos I am a color girl. I love bright tattoos. The bolder the better. And one of the hardest things for me to do is to give a character a black and gray tattoo—but that style if perfect for Odalia. A mural from her shoulders to her hips of iconic New Orleans history. Snapping gators, flat bottomed boats and a debutante strolling by the water.

This is one of those frustrating times as a writer where I wish I could draw. That I could sketch up the image in my head and show people, but I can’t so I have to hope that by reading Odalia, readers also grasp the beauty of her tattoos.
